I finally got my hands on a proper lab fume extraction kit from pace (second hand).

Its nice, its got a good quality centrifugal fan which is not noisy but it also not quiet more of a background rumble with its muffled exhaust. The rigid arm has enough reach and adjustability. I think you could easily make a dyi version of the arm with a 3d printer and some pvc tube.

The only down side is that the filters are expensive. so need I need a solution to that; maybe a vacuum hepa filter and some 3d printed adaptor when this filter runs out.
I see u can get activated carbon for aquariums for not too much on ebay.

I would like to drop the speed of the fan and drop the noise too as well as add some smarts to only run the fan only when needed or for a set period of time. The holder for the iron has a weak pull up to 3.3v i can tap off that to know when the iron is in use. As for the hot air, maybe i just come off the blower fan.
