I seem to recall VK3YNV's 1296 contact from Shepparton to Frankston (I think it was, or maybe Dandenong...) running a TX powered by 4CX250 valves and air cooling blowers that came out of the siren factory!

Actually it was a homebrew 2C39 and a homebrew 3m dish, but you are right about the blower noise.
Graeme at the Frankston end was smarter he had a watercooled 2C39.

He wondered why the cooling water was turning a grey colour when the plate voltage was turned on, turned out the aluminium heatsink was being electrolytically dissolved.

The 4CX250 amplifier you remember was the one I used on 2M SSB. Still around somewhere in the junk pile probably.
