I recently purchased (Ebay) a 2M/70CM hand held for just under $40. ($39.47)
It goes quite well, but I am less than enthused with the plug 10V 0.5A pack of dubious quality.
And it is 10V!!!
So, a modification was in order.
To allow me the use of a 12V or other power supply, like in the car, I've added a 3A switch mode regulator. These little beauties are very handy, and as they are about the size of a postage stamp, can fit easily in a lot of retrofit applications.
I've just put an order in for 10..
And, for the 10 regulators, I had to pay a staggering $8.04.
These can supply 3A max, but are best to keep the current lower for heat reasons.
A flat strip of Aluminium bent up at the ends is clamped under the PCB with a foam washer as a spacer. Also, some super glue helps hold it in place.
More glue is used to stick a strip of heat sink insulation down, with the reg stuck on that.
The power in tracks are cut and hooked onto the regulator input.
The output is connected back to the charger on the other side of the cuts.
BUT, set the reg output volts to 10V first!
Now I use an old HP laptop 19V supply to run it.
The old plug pack is tossed into a junk box.
If I get around to it, Imay put this one on my Megga to see what the breakdown voltage is.
