Many years ago I modified my Barlow Wadley receiver with a FET front end amplifier. The original design heavily loads the antenna tuned circuits by way of the low impedance of the existing bipolar transistor TR5. With the modification in place the antenna coils are lightly loaded by the high impedance of the FET gate input and the Q and voltage gain of the tuned circuits is improved. After the FET amp. the signals are passed on to the existing RF. amp TR5. I think that better matching of the front end circuit is achieved. When my set was switched on after the mod. the performance was much better on all bands. Some members might be interested in this idea. The image shows the circuit and the connection positions for the modification.
