The Hakko FR301 desoldering gun has a filter that stops solder and gunk from fouling up the vacuum pump, these filter pads are consumable items and need to be replaced periodically. The Denon SC7000Z that we used to use at DSP systems Denys discovered that cigarette filters would fit nicely and we used those for many years. The FR301 uses a larger diameter filter pad ( 15mm) and the usual suppliers charge ridiculous prices. $35 for a pack of 10, plus $25 postage. Vs $7.80 at Bunnings for about 100x
I have found that the material that the Bunnings Stefani 5 micron water filter seems to work well. For a measly $7.80 I've got a lifetime supply of filter pads.
The material cuts pretty easily and you don't have to be super precise, if just squishes down to fit nicely. A 15 mm wad punch would be the perfect tool to cut out the right size, but I don't have one.
The desoldering gun works a treat.
