I've been quietly building a few of these myself.
Not surprisingly I've used the same parts as Hayden as there is a very comprehensive parts list compiled by some Meshcore users that lists the known good parts.
There is a _lot_ of cr@p on Ali Express and I'm glad that someone else has done some of the sifting to find the occasional nugget.
The Seeed Studio Xiao Wio modules are excellent for this type of application. Very low power consumption and more than enough processing ability.
There are other options that have BLE and/or WiFi but the power consumption does not suit remote solar powered operation. They are well suited for internal use though as you can link the Meshcore system to a PC.
The 3dB antenna is a better choice as the lobes are broader as Hayden tried to explain.
I hope that getting the average Meshcore enthusiast to understand that higher apparent gain does not equal better performance, likewise more Tx power is not necessarily better, may spike an interest in other radio topics and we could get more licensed operators. Yeah, sure.
